Superior Machine Works had developed a new type of generator that was environmentally friendly and could lie controlled from a distance. Superior's research had determined that the market was quite large and had the potential to be very profitable.
Superior was marketing two models: a small, lightweight version for people who would use it to power small tools and a bigger, heavier version used generally as backup power for an office or home in addition to supplying power for a variety of electrical tools.

The smaller version retailed for $895, while the larger version sold for $ 1,500. The larger version had a patented noise reduction feature on it that significantly reduced the decibels of sound the machine produced- Studies on similar equipment had shown that over a long period of time the noise level of the small machine could produce hearing loss.
Meanwhile, Superior's main competitor was also developing a generator very rrmch like Superior's small version and that company was also aware of the noise problem and the potential for deafness over time.

Still, it was going ahead with the product. Superior was faced with a real dilemma. If it didn't move quickly to get its smaller version to market, it would lose its first-mover advantage to its competitor. At the same time, did Superior want to market a product that was known to cause deafness over time? If it only marketed the larger machine, it would quickly lose market share to its competitor's smaller, lighter machine.

If Superior could not introduce a successful product quickly, it would have to lay off many of its workers.
